Thank you so much for writing this AMAZING book. I compleetly fell in love with this book. The way you layered Robins character and made Levi to be the perfect match by trying to open up her proteceted selfesteem. I would really like you to wite a sequal to this book because I just Can’t get enough I’ve already read it like 6 times in two days, and thats amazing for me because i never read (don’t like to read unless it’s a really good book). Dear Vicki Grant
We are pupill from the Eduard Mörike-School from Germany.
At the moment we read your Book ,,Dangerous Friend“. It`s a
great Book. That`s why we havequestion to you.

    The question are :
    -When you was born ?
-Why you write books like ,,Dangerous Friend “?
-Why you take this kind of Job ?
-Is it hard to became a writer

We are happy if you can
    answerd our question !!

    Best wishes,
    Class 8b

    • vickigrant says:

Hello, Everyone from Eduard Morike School in Germany!
I’m sorry I’ve taken so long to get back to you. I was away on holiday. (It’s EXTREMELY hot in Canada right now. I have to stay in the shade or in the water.) Now in answer to your questions…
      1. When was I born? Let’s just say ‘a long time ago’. My children are 22, 19 and 16 years old so that should give you some idea.
      2. Why do I write books like Dangerous Friend (that’s called ‘Dead End Job’ in English)? I like to write books that are scary and/or funny because I think that type of book gets kids reading – even kids who maybe think they don’t like to read. Dead-End Job was also based – a little bit – on something that happened to me when I was young.
      3. Why did I take this kind of job? I used to be an advertising writer, then I was a television writer and then I decided to write books. Writing is kind of the only thing I know how to do (other than knit and play Scrabble but you can’t really make a living at that.)
      4. Is it hard to become a writer? Not really. You just have to do it. And do it. And do it. And do it. Eventually, you’ll get pretty good at it. The great thing is that now you don’t even need a publisher to think so. You can just put your writing on line yourself.

      Have a great summer, 8b!

      VIcki

    Dear Vicki,
Reading is an important part of my life.
As a second language r it’s hard to find a book which I can understand (not every word but the context) and I like!

Not suitable… is an awesome, terrific, and fun book. I wasn’t able to put it out of my hand and stop reading it! And my first thought after I was done reading it was “I really want a next page”

My mom went to your book premier and brought me back your new book and some others.
I can’t wait to read them.

Thank you for writing such good books!

  14. Maureen says:

    Vicki,
I love your books. I can’t put them down after I start. Your stories are amazing and I love that there so relatable. I want to write books after high school. Any advise for a good writing program ?
Thanks for all the stories! :)
    Xo Maureen

    • vickigrant says:

      Thanks, Maureen! I’m very flattered!

I’m afraid I don’t know much about writing programs. I’ve only ever – and recently at that – took a one-day course. (It was with the author Sarah Selecki and was great.) I’ve included a number of writing tips on this blog from different authors which may be useful. (Under, not surprisingly, “Writing Tips”.) Another place to go for advice about programs would be your local writers union or federation. If you’re Canadian, there’s both a national group (The Writers Union of Canada) and provincial ones. They’re very helpful and would have extensive lists of available courses, I’d think.

  15. Juliana says:

DId you write B Negative? Also your books are amazing!

  16. Deb Pope says:

    Hi Viki,
I was wondering if you were in the area (Newmarket) may or June 2012 and if you would be able to come to our school. Our grades 7 and 8 would be thrilled to meet you. Last year some of our kids enjoyed Pig Boy and this year they have been reading Not Suitable for Family Viewing.
    thank you

    • vickigrant says:

Hi, Deb – I’m sorry that I’m only replying to your email now. I somehow seemed to have missed it. Unfortunately, I won’t be in the Newmarket area in June this year. I do plan to come to TO in the fall. I know that would mean different classes but if you’re interested in having me drop by for a visit, please get in touch. My apologies again for taking so long to get back to you. Vicki

  17. Julia says:

    Hi Vicki!

I read not suitable for family viewing for my isu for grade 11 english (im getting grade 11 english in summer school to get ahead). Anyways, i have to write a biography on you and i cant seem to find much information. I also have to find 3-5 events in your lifetime that is reflected in this novel. Its not that hard of an assignment but seeing as i cant find much information i don’t have much for my biography on you and i don’t really know of many events in your life that are reflected in the novel, because i don’t know too much about your life. I really really enjoyed your book, Im not much of a reader and when i do im extremely slow, however i read this book in a day, i thought it was great! I really hope you write a sequel! My point of this comment was to see if you could comment back or e-mail me some information of yourself, like the jist of yourself, it would be a HUGE help in my project! its due monday just so your aware!

    thanks!

    -JULIA

P.S im going to read your new book the dirty secret one because i thought not suitable for family living was great. We have to read silently in class and it was so hard to keep my laughter in! every once and a while i would burst out laughing! it was kind of embarrassing but really funny.

  18. Anna says:

I read your book not suitable for family viewing and fell in love with it back in 2010.I was there when they announced your book had one the red maple award. I waited in line to get the book signed for my school. If i only knew that i could buy my own copy there i would of and gotten it signed by you. You probably don’t remember me but i suggested to turn the book into a movie. Not suitable for family viewing was the first and best book i have ever read and is still my number one book. The way this book was written stunned me and after it i fell in love with reading

    - Anna :)

    • vickigrant says:

What a wonderful comment, Anna! It’s what every author would want to hear – that someone fell in love with reading because of their book. Thank you. That’s amazing. Vicki
